Moving to Where With Elle

Over the past five years of documenting what’s in my wardrobe I’ve simplified a solid system for closet clean outs, spent a year away from retail therapy (and audited another year’s worth of purchases), identified smarter shopping habits, developed a deeper sense of personal style, re-framed perspective, greened my beauty routine, married my best friend, and packed my bags for a few lucky adventures around the world. Over those years I set aside time to develop a system of personal values that’s helped me become more intentional about what I choose to consume each day. I’ve since shifted my daily habits and decisions to engage in more ethical shopping, make less wasteful purchases, and center my projects and posts around a more sustainable lifestyle. As the final chapter of Rose & Fig comes to a close, I’m beginning to write a new story that’s all about celebrating healthy, vibrant, verdant living — where to go, shop, and stay — as well as smart, simple solutions for sustainable living and evergreen guides geared at fostering a more …

Key Piece: Everlane Seed Stitch Sweater

Featherweight and so soft, Everlane’s cotton and cashmere raglan works equally well as a summer staple as it does a layering piece for cooler weather. In keeping with the nothing new campaign, I waited until a size small showed up on eBay and have since paired it with office and weekend wear alike. REVIEW Featherweight and so, super soft – you’ll want to hand wash this or have it dry cleaned. This is also so lightweight that …

Key Piece: Barbour Beadnell Jacket

“Study how water flows in a valley stream, smoothly and freely between the rocks. Also learn from holy books and wise people. Everything – even mountains, rivers, plants and trees – should be your teacher.”  -Morihei Ueshiba Comfortable in our routines and serious little schedules, how often we forget to look at the wide world around us. I remember once reading that it takes hearing a true statement seventeen times to forget a false one. Similarly, habits repeated daily become such a natural part of our lives that they require hard work and pointed self-awareness to change. This fall I have worked on unlearning a few old shopping habits and helping better ones take root: Looking for more long-lasting goods, finding second-hand staples, and focusing on where, from what, and how the clothes I choose to buy are made. You may note some changes and new features around here – I hope you enjoy them. BARBOUR BEADNELL JACKET: Lots of options and sales at Nordstrom, Saks, Macy’s, and Bloomingdales. Occasionally pops up at The Real …
