What’s Your Perspective?

This morning I stepped out into a snow-dusted wonderland. The air’s clean and cold. The sun is strong. The sky is true blue. The century-old grove of trees in our backyard tinkles proudly in its winter finery — bare branches enveloped in a thousand sparkling icicles. For the first time in a long time, the world around me feels calm, quiet, comfortable. It’s beautiful. The other day I read that procrastination is just your mind and body joining forces to make you stop and listen, to change course or edit your priorities. Well. I’ve been procrastinating over this post. I’ve been nervous and unsure of how to touch on a new conversation with the universe, with you.

First Day of Fall: Setting Intentions

Fall has a way of washing over me like a warm bath after a long day. Swirling around in greens and golds, teasing candle flames with its gentle airs, soaking the senses with firewood and scotch and apple pie — fall is the warm, caramel refrain of your favorite jazz song. The coltish delight of learning something new. The onomatopoeia of uncorking a juicy Willamette Pinot, bone-dry leaves underfoot, the final seconds in a tied football game, yelling out deep breaths of wonderfully cold air. And while there’s much ado about the effervescent month of December — the parties and the lights and the snow and the thought of January 1st, of Chapter 1 of 365 — I find myself more invigorated, creative, and balanced each and every September equinox. Over the past couple of months I’ve been tinkering away and settling into the cadence of this new season. Last January I picked “balance” as my word of the year for 2016 (“no” was a tempting albeit less constructive option). I rolled up my sleeves …

5 Minute Face: Dewy Daily Makeup Routine

My idea of perfect daily makeup is somewhere between I woke up like this (flawless) and that endless summer glow that can only be found after a week sunbathing off the coast of Spain, lips stained and cheeks flushed off a big glass of Malbec and night of dancing. Really reasonable for a designer who works in an office all week and gets fully flush-faced at first sight of sunshine and rosé, right? With practice and a few miracle workers, I’ve figured out how to roll out of bed with eyes half shut and spend five minutes prepping for my day with a few good products to get glowing. Here we go… OSEA Sea Minerals Spray A couple spritzes of this perks my face right up. OSEA’s Spray is the first thing I put on my face in the morning and the last thing I spray on each night, before my face has to go eight hours without water. It’s a seriously calming formula that’s packed with vitamins and finishes skin with a gorgeous dewy …

Spring Wellness Rituals: My Natural Beauty Routine

2017 update: I’ve edited down a bit on my beauty bag since this post. Here’s my current makeup routine, simpler everyday skincare, and weekend facial ritual. Rahua and Weleda, mentioned below, are still two of my favorites. I switched to Weleda’s citrus deodorant last year – it works just as well as the rose, and I like the scent a bit more! More than anything my skin loves a solid routine. Adjusting these beauty habits with the seasons works really well for my body and spring has brought on quite a few changes since my last wellness check in. I’m craving more exfoliation, lighter moisturizers, and loads of detoxifying salts, herbs, essential oils, and fresh spring scents. Still on track with my beauty resolutions, I’m also continuing to clean out my medicine cabinet to: Phase out products that are tested on animals or contain any toxic ingredients Support naturally-minded brands that give back Feed my skin and body more vitamins Sound like your cup of (Get Gorgeous antioxidant) tea? Let’s go! FACE SKINCARE & MAKEUP …

Winter Wellness Rituals, A Mega Post

So. I’ve been ruminating and rewriting this post over the past few months. This is going to wrap up a lot of last year’s personal projects and what I’ve learned. And I’ve tried my best to organize it all in such a way that I don’t seem an incoherent, crazy person to you. I know, I’m such a good friend. THE POWER OF SMALL HABITS Have you ever started a small project in one area of your life, only to find it quietly take strong roots in other places? Each time I stand behind an idea and build a routine around it, something new in my core beliefs is also unearthed. Like a polaroid in the open air, I find that when I potter away on my little projects, the bigger picture develops all on its own. INTO THE WARDROBE And so if my mission to edit down my closet and the Nothing New project have taught me anything, it’s to more aggressively question what I buy and keep, and why. When I pointed that …

Cold Weather Cure: How To Make A (Damn Good) Hot Toddy

If you’re lucky enough to be reading this on the sands of some gloriously hot island, do skip right over this post and get back to working on your tan lines (and hi, bottle up the Vitamin D and send my way?). Everyone else out there braving freezing rain, nipping winds, and oh, I don’t know, seventeen strains of strep and eighteen holiday get-togethers, my Scotch-Irish forefathers have a little elixir of wellness to share with you. Known as a hot toddy in Scotland and a hot whiskey in Ireland, my very favorite winter drink is a triple threat to the cold weather ick – honey soothes the throat, warm whiskey and pepper clear congestion, and lemon adds a nice shot of Vitamin C and bioflavinoids (but by all means, if one of those seventeen strains has really caught up with you, trade out the whiskey for ginger tea). For a bonafide toddy you’ll need: 1 tablespoon of honey (go local if you can) Dash of cayenne pepper 3/4 mug of water Half a lemon …

Autumn Wellness Rituals

There’s something so wonderful about the cool air that comes with the first weeks of fall. Like clockwork, those crisp mornings signal some primal rhythm in me. Hunt, gather, slow down. I start to crave citrus, warm tea, hot baths, and five more minutes under the covers. Autumn also has a way of welcoming inspiration and ideas into my life. This year it means a new little series for Rose & Fig: Wellness Rituals. Each post I’ll highlight the routines that help me to be well, stay stylish, and live verdantly. First up, autumn wellness rituals! 1. Super Tea: Bee Pollen, Spicy Honey, Ginger, Citrus // Steep these in a mug of hot water for a one-two punch against colds, congestion, and fall allergies. 1-2 tbsp bee pollen 1 tbsp spicy honey (or regular honey with a dash of vinegar and cayenne pepper) 2 tbsp shaved ginger Juice from 1/2 lemon or lime Containing every essential amino acid, bee pollen is one of nature’s most nourishing superfoods – and when I buy locally, both pollen and …
