Gifts for Her & Him, Home & Them

Growing up, my favorite moments were spent over winter break when the luxurious gift of time was bestowed upon little me — better known then as “Messy Jessie” for the many craft projects that blanketed our home’s hardwoods in glitter, twigs, and bits of tartan ribbon. I’d spend whole weeks making and dreaming and hunting for the perfect presents for loved ones. I found a sense of pride in punching above my weight, poring over endless aisles and catalogs to unearth the biggest and best gifts that my budget would allow. Then and now, my holiday compass points to what is joyful, useful, beautiful, and worthwhile. This year’s holiday gift guide is stocked accordingly with consciously considered ideas and objects that are ethical, sustainable, well-made, and filled with delight. I hope you enjoy them as you celebrate many merry moments this season. PS: 34 slow fashion, healthy home, and natural beauty spots and Cyber Week deals to shop. Spring Wellness Rituals: My Natural Beauty Routine

2017 update: I’ve edited down a bit on my beauty bag since this post. Here’s my current makeup routine, simpler everyday skincare, and weekend facial ritual. Rahua and Weleda, mentioned below, are still two of my favorites. I switched to Weleda’s citrus deodorant last year – it works just as well as the rose, and I like the scent a bit more! More than anything my skin loves a solid routine. Adjusting these beauty habits with the seasons works really well for my body and spring has brought on quite a few changes since my last wellness check in. I’m craving more exfoliation, lighter moisturizers, and loads of detoxifying salts, herbs, essential oils, and fresh spring scents. Still on track with my beauty resolutions, I’m also continuing to clean out my medicine cabinet to: Phase out products that are tested on animals or contain any toxic ingredients Support naturally-minded brands that give back Feed my skin and body more vitamins Sound like your cup of (Get Gorgeous antioxidant) tea? Let’s go! FACE SKINCARE & MAKEUP …

How to Create the Perfect Bedroom

“You’re either in your bed or in your shoes, so it pays to invest in both,” maker of fine shoes and fellow sleepyhead John Wildsmith once noted. And so in keeping with those little wellness rituals that make a big difference, I’ve been working on some changes in search of a better night’s rest. After all, at eight hours a night, we spend a third of our lives in bed! FLAX LINEN SHEETS After finding that pure linen bedding stays warm in the winter and cool in the summer, wicks moisture without feeling damp, and has one of the smallest footprints of any fabric, I was sold on trying linen sheets. One week into making up the bed with an organic linen set, there’s no way I’d go back to anything else. Our linen sheets and duvets are from Veratex, Restoration Hardware, Ikea, and a Russian tailor I found on eBay. There are some beautiful made in USA options from Linoto, Rough Linen, and Etsy’s handmade options. If you’re on a tight budget, West Elm, …

Autumn Wellness Rituals

There’s something so wonderful about the cool air that comes with the first weeks of fall. Like clockwork, those crisp mornings signal some primal rhythm in me. Hunt, gather, slow down. I start to crave citrus, warm tea, hot baths, and five more minutes under the covers. Autumn also has a way of welcoming inspiration and ideas into my life. This year it means a new little series for Rose & Fig: Wellness Rituals. Each post I’ll highlight the routines that help me to be well, stay stylish, and live verdantly. First up, autumn wellness rituals! 1. Super Tea: Bee Pollen, Spicy Honey, Ginger, Citrus // Steep these in a mug of hot water for a one-two punch against colds, congestion, and fall allergies. 1-2 tbsp bee pollen 1 tbsp spicy honey (or regular honey with a dash of vinegar and cayenne pepper) 2 tbsp shaved ginger Juice from 1/2 lemon or lime Containing every essential amino acid, bee pollen is one of nature’s most nourishing superfoods – and when I buy locally, both pollen and …

My latest guest post with BodhiLuxe Magazine is all about fresh ideas for a stylish date night. Here are a few date night ideas we’ve shared since then… A simple dinner along the Champ de Mars in Paris Plan It a Little Differently …
