Stone Cold Fox: Summer Whites

It’s finally summer and high time to bring out all the deliciously delicate silk and linen that’s been hidden away at the back of my closet since last September. Hallelujah. Come the first of June I always begin to itch for more sunshine (Vitamin D deficiency or no?) and always start to pencil in long summer nights out, wearing the sexier pieces in my closet. Striking a balance between looking good and feeling comfortable is easy enough so long as I rely on a summer skin secret my mom shared long ago: When you’re getting dressed and it’s dripping-humid-mid-summer-in-Georgia-hot out: Show off one feature, play down the rest. Off the shoulder dress and minimal sandals. Long sleeve, leg-baring silk dress and killer heels. Simple silk top and jet black, short, short leather shorts. Lightweight sweater and flirty eyelash shorts. The same works for my makeup routine: I’ll throw on a strong red lip or go for smoky eyes or fill in thick, Hepburnesque brows, but never all together. Choose the best. Save the …

3 Weeks in Europe: A Complete Guide to Packing Light & Printable Packing List

Pack for three weeks in Europe with a single carry on. Plus: capsule wardrobe packing system, what’s in my bag, travel tips, printable packing list. For a long time I’ve been whittling down my travel luggage. If broken roller bags, sore shoulders, a feisty baggage fee episode en route to Zambia, and the mental image of a single suitcase languishing on the tarmac of the Madrid airport have taught me one thing about exploring this world, it is this: Pack light to travel well. How light? Whether a trip is three days or three weeks, my max is a 10 kg / 22 lb duffel bag paired with a little backpack. Twenty-two pounds is the limit for carry on luggage on most smaller airlines, and according to seriously old school backpacking experts it’s also my ideal pack weight. For me, traveling well means having enough clothes, toiletries, and travel essentials to be comfortable without dragging along anything I could do without. The fewer things I carry, the less I have to worry about keeping track …

Black and Blue: Cuyana Silk Dress and Loeffler Luz Sandals

When hunting for closet staples I tend to agonize over nice dresses and nice shoes. Both are investment pieces and rightfully so – the best pieces in your closet should especially be meant to last – worn in and worn well, season over season. I’ve landed on two keepers between Cuyana, the San Francisco-based lean closet brand started by two friends, and Loeffler Randall, the shoe company founded by a husband and wife who started designing the elegant, effortless shoes they couldn’t find elsewhere.

Day to Night: e. fitzpatrick and the Perfect Cold Weather Dress

Rare is the day that the chaotic universe of holiday fashion delivers up the most perfect, creamy little white dress. Effortless and versatile, a dress that’s as comfortable running errands and dropping by the office as it is attending every last holiday bash and New Year’s soiree on your jam-packed December calendar. Rarer still does that dress hail from New York’s garment district (without breaking the bank), hand sketched by a woman who is as interested in anthropology and the history of fashion as she is in designing an ethical, timeless wardrobe, in hopes that the dresses she patterns from scratch will be passed on to the next generation.

Fall/Winter Wardrobe: Living in…

Earlier this week on a visit to North Georgia I went to sleep with a bedroom window open and woke up to find the season’s first frost had settled overnight. I couldn’t help but jump out of bed and scurry around the crisp grass, gulping up big deep breaths that fogged up every exhale. I love everything about fall, from brisk morning walks over scalding coffee and crunching leaves in riding boots, to long campfire nights spent over red wine and under big woolly blankets.
